Google's AI update is hiding local businesses from search
September has been a busy month for search — Google has quietly made two changes that could already be affecting how many customers find you. Here is what to know and what to do.
01
Cookie-cutter content is now losing you rankings
Google refreshed its helpful content systems this month with a specific focus on local search, according to Optra Marketing. Content templated across towns — where only the place name changes — lost visibility. Businesses with original content built on real local knowledge gained rankings instead. If your service pages could belong to anyone in any town, Google is now treating them that way, and sending those enquiries elsewhere.
Do this: Pull up one of your location or service pages this month and ask honestly whether it contains anything a competitor in another town could not have written — if not, rewrite it with a real customer story or a piece of genuine trade knowledge before your next busy season.
From us: If your site needs a proper rethink rather than a quick edit, a rescue starts from £1,400 and we can tell you after a look whether that is what is needed.
02
Google AI Mode is about to sit above every search result
Google AI Mode launched in the UK in late July 2026, and according to TDMP and Search Engine Land, the AI Mode button is expected to move into the main search bar in mid-to-late September — making it the first thing a customer sees. Instead of showing your website link, it builds its own answer from Business Profiles, reviews and strong signals. A thin or out-of-date profile and you may simply not appear in that answer at all.
Do this: This month, open your Google Business Profile, fill in any blank fields, add at least three fresh photos, and ask a recent happy customer to leave you a Google review.
03
Xero's AI is saving accountants 7 hours a week
At Xerocon London in July 2026, Xero announced Auto Bank Reconciliation as part of its agentic platform JAX — matching transactions to bank feeds in real time, with automatic document chasing and Corporation Tax filing coming later in the year. A Xero study of UK accounting practices found that firms using AI save an average of 7.1 hours per week, according to Xero's blog and Insightful Accountant. If you or your accountant is still doing this manually at month-end, the saving may already be available to you without switching software.
Do this: Log into Xero this month and check whether Auto Bank Reconciliation is switched on, or drop your accountant a message asking whether they have enabled JAX features yet.

One thing to do this month
Ask one customer for a review this week
Not at the end of the month, not when you remember — this week, after a job goes well, send one customer a direct link to your Google review page. One review from a real person carries more weight with Google's AI than almost anything else you can do for free right now.
