Why is my website slow? The fixes, ranked by payback

Slow is not one problem. It is a stack of small ones, and the order you fix them in decides whether this costs £150 or £15,000. Ranked by payback, from a company whose own sites load in under a second on two bars of signal:

First: measure it like a customer

Not on the office wifi, on your phone, on mobile data, outside. Run it through PageSpeed Insights as well, but trust the thumb test more — a score is a diagnosis aid, not the illness. Note the number of seconds before you can read the page and before you can tap anything. Those two numbers are what everything below is spending against.

The cheap half: images and bloat

Nine slow sites out of ten are carrying photographs the size of posters and a decade of plugins, themes and tracking snippets nobody remembers installing. Compressing images to modern formats and stripping dead weight is unglamorous, quick, and routinely halves load times. If your site was built on a page builder, the builder itself is often the poster.

The middle: hosting that was never right

£3-a-month shared hosting puts you on a server with hundreds of strangers, and you all queue together. Decent hosting is £10–£40 a month and frequently transforms a site on its own. The tell: the site is sometimes fine and sometimes treacle — that rhythm is the queue, not your code.

The expensive end: the platform is the problem

Some sites are slow structurally — a heavy theme fighting a heavy builder on heavy hosting, each update adding weight. There is a point where tuning it is polishing a canal boat for a race. An honest rescue names that point in writing: ours costs from £900, fixes speed, security, findability and ownership in that order, and if a rebuild genuinely is cheaper we say so and credit the diagnosis against it.

Why speed is money, not vanity

Every extra second of loading loses a real slice of visitors, and Google treats speed as a ranking signal because its users hate waiting as much as yours do. A site that drops from six seconds to under two typically sees more pages viewed, more enquiries, and better rankings for the same content — the rare fix that pays three ways at once.

Questions we get on this

What is a good load time for a small business website?

Readable inside one second, interactive inside two, on a phone on mobile data. Our own builds target under a second because that is where sites stop losing people.

Will a caching plugin fix my slow WordPress site?

Sometimes, partially — caching hides weight rather than removing it. It is a fair first aid step; if the site is still slow with caching on, the weight itself needs dealing with.

How much does it cost to speed up a website?

Image and bloat work sits in the low hundreds; a full rescue covering speed, security, findability and ownership is from £900 with us, fixed price, written diagnosis first.
